Play Chess Against the Computer: Choosing Bots, Levels and Difficulty
There is a particular kind of comfort in playing a computer. It never sighs at a slow move, never gloats, and never leaves mid-game. It will play at three in the morning and it will play the same opening forty times in a row so you can work out what you keep getting wrong. For anyone learning, a machine opponent is the most patient training partner available.
The catch is that computer chess is now absurdly strong, and an engine at full power is not a training partner at all - it is a demolition. Getting value out of computer play is almost entirely about choosing the right level and the right kind of opponent.
How chess engines actually think
An engine does two things. It searches, generating legal moves, then replies to those moves, then replies to the replies, building an enormous tree of possibilities. And it evaluates, scoring the resulting positions so it can tell which branch is worth pursuing.
The search cannot be exhaustive - the number of possible chess positions dwarfs anything a computer could enumerate - so engines prune ruthlessly, abandoning lines that already look worse than something they have found. Classical evaluation counted material, king safety, pawn structure and piece activity using hand-written rules. Modern engines instead use compact neural networks trained on hundreds of millions of positions, which judge positions with a subtlety the old rule-based approach never managed.
The practical upshot: today's leading engines running on a normal laptop play at a level no human has ever reached. This stopped being a contest some time ago. Deep Blue's win over Garry Kasparov in 1997 was headline news precisely because it was close; nothing has been close since.
Stockfish and the alternatives
Stockfish is the engine most people encounter, largely because it is free, open source and consistently at or near the top of the rating lists. It is what sits behind the analysis feature on most chess sites and behind many "play the computer" modes.
Leela Chess Zero takes a different route, learning through self-play in the style of DeepMind's AlphaZero, and tends to produce more speculative, positionally-driven chess. Komodo Dragon is another regular at the top. For learning purposes the differences barely matter - all of them are far beyond you and me. What matters is how the strength is throttled down.
Picking a level that actually helps
Sites weaken engines in two very different ways, and the distinction is worth understanding. Some cut the search depth, so the engine simply looks fewer moves ahead. Others let the engine calculate fully but deliberately pick a worse move now and then. The second approach produces stranger games: long stretches of impeccable play punctuated by an inexplicable blunder. The first feels more like a human opponent who is just not very sharp.

A good rule: aim for a level where you win somewhere between a quarter and a third of your games. Winning nine out of ten means you are rehearsing what you already know. Losing every game teaches you only that you lost. The productive zone is uncomfortable but survivable, and you should expect to nudge the level up every few weeks if you are practising properly. The same logic applies when you play chess against people: you improve fastest against opponents a little stronger than you are.
Human-like bots versus raw engine strength
Most platforms now offer named bots with personalities and target ratings, often trained to reproduce the mistake patterns of real players at that level. These are considerably better practice than a crippled top engine, because their errors are the kind a human would actually make - hanging a piece under pressure, missing a back-rank threat, overextending on the kingside.
A weakened engine, by contrast, tends to blunder at random moments with no psychological logic to it, which trains you to expect gifts that a real opponent will never hand over. If your platform offers both, prefer the bots for practice and keep the pure engine for analysis afterwards.
Using the engine to review your games
This is where computers deliver their real value, and where most players use them badly. The common mistake is skimming an accuracy percentage and moving on. That number tells you almost nothing you can act on.
A more useful routine:
- Review the game yourself first, without the engine. Mark the moments you felt unsure. Guessing before you check is what turns review into learning.
- Look only at the big swings. Ignore the half-pawn quibbles. Find the three or four moves where the evaluation lurched, because those are the moves that decided the game.
- Ask why, not what. Knowing the engine wanted a different move is useless on its own. Play out the suggested line until you can see what it was aiming at.
- Look for repeats. If you drop material to the same motif across several games, that is a specific gap you can close with targeted puzzles.
One thing engines cannot give you is a plan you would have found yourself. They evaluate; they do not explain. If a suggested move makes no sense to you even after playing through the line, it is entirely reasonable to note it and move on.
Two drills a computer does better than a person
Beyond ordinary games, there are two exercises that only really work against a machine, because no human opponent will sit through them.
- Endgame conversion. Set up a basic winning endgame - king and rook against a lone king, or king and pawn against king - and play it out against a maximum-strength engine, which will defend perfectly. If you can convert it against flawless resistance, you will never fumble it against a person. Most players discover their technique is far shakier than they assumed, and the fix takes an evening rather than a month.
- Position defence. Load a position where you are slightly worse and play it from the harder side, repeatedly. Defending is the skill club players neglect most, largely because it is unpleasant, and an engine will happily grind you down twenty times in a row without complaint.
Give yourself a proper clock for both - the formats are compared in our guide to chess time controls, and rapid settings work best here. Both drills share a virtue: they isolate one skill and repeat it. Ordinary games mix everything together, which is realistic but slow to learn from. Fifteen focused minutes on a single endgame usually beats three more casual games.
Offline play and games without registration
Computer chess is well suited to playing without an internet connection - the engine runs on your own device, so there is no server to talk to. Most mobile apps support full offline play, which makes them the natural choice for trains, flights and anywhere with unreliable signal. Browser-based computer games generally need no account either, since there is no rating or opponent to manage.
This is also the friendliest way to test an unfamiliar opening. You can play the same first eight moves twenty times, see which structures keep going wrong, and adjust - something no human opponent will tolerate. Where computer practice falls short
Machines will not teach you to handle nerves, to read an opponent's body language over the board, or to cope with the peculiar pressure of a clock ticking down while someone stares at you. They also produce a subtly unrealistic diet of positions - the strange half-blunders of a throttled engine are not the errors real people make.
